Language requirements for ERASMUS incoming students

Most courses at the FU are taught in German. Courses in English are very limited (exceptions are the degree programmes in English Philology, North American Studies and some Master's programmes).

You can find information about the English- taught courses offered in your specific degree programme in the course catalogue. You can also find information on language requirements on the information websites for incoming students of the institutes and departments.

The language requirements for your exchange are specified in the exchange agreement between your home university and FU Berlin. FUB's Incoming Office will require you to provide proof of language proficiency according to the exchange agreement for enrolment. If you are unsure which language certificate you need to submit, please contact incoming@fu-berlin.de and let us know your home university and your field of study. It is recommended that you have a minimum level of B2 in the language of instruction in order to be able to understand the course content.

If you would like to improve your German language skills during your exchange programme, the Language Centre at FU Berlin offers German courses at various levels, both as a preparatory course (subject to a fee) before the semester and as a course (free of charge) during the semester. In addition, exchange students have access to a special interdisciplinary course programme (bachelor's level) focusing on Berlin and Germany in an international context in German (B1) and English.
