Are you interested in an Erasmus semester at the FU?

Here we have put together some information that might be helpful for an initial orientation:

Fees

Erasmus students do not pay tuition fees during their semester abroad. However, all students are required to pay a semester fee in order to enroll at the Freie Universität Berlin. This fee includes the costs for the BVG semester ticket (about 200 € per semester), as well as social fees of the Studierendenwerk (about 60 € per semester).

Deadlines

For the nomination at the FU:

For the winter semester: May 1st

For the summer semester: November 1st

If you have any further questions, please contact the Erasmus coordinator or the International Office of your home university if you have any further questions. You must apply at home first and receive a nomination to make an exchange at the FU.

Housing

International students are responsible to find an accommodation for their entire stay in Berlin. However, there are a few accommodation options offered by the university. You will recieve further information after you have been nominated.

Duration of the semester

The length of the semester at the FU may vary from your home university. The following times apply to summer semesters:

Semester duration

01.04. - 30.09.

Lecture period

early April - mid-July

Lecture-free period

starting mid-July

The following times are expected for winter semesters:

Semester duration

01.10. - 31.03.

Lecture period

early October - mid-February

Lecture-free period

Language requirements

Most courses at the FU are taught in German. If you are not studying at the Department of English Philology or North American Studies, courses in English are very limited. For this reason, the Erasmus team, as part of the enrollment documents, requires proof of your German language skills.

My university has no contract with the FU Berlin:

You can only spend a semester abroad in Berlin if your home university has an Erasmus contract with the FU. If your university does not offer a contract with the FU for your specific degree program, we kindly ask you to contact the Erasmus coordinator at your home university regarding this issue first. Your home university should then contact us directly: incoming@fu-berlin.de
