Use of the library is free, and you may also borrow media or access it online or in the library free of charge.

Library fees and charges are calculated according to Freie Universität Berlin’s library fee regulations.

Late Fees

Late fees are calculated per library item and per volume as follows:
For the first reminder: 2.00 euros
Second reminder: 5.00 euros plus 2.00 euros for the first reminder = 7.00 euros
Third reminder: 10.00 euros plus 7.00 euros for the first and second reminders = 17.00 euros

Late fees begin to accrue on the date the reminder is issued.

If you do not pay your late fees upon receiving the third reminder, the library will issue a legal notice to pay. An additional fee of 20.00 euros will apply to this notice.

Interlibrary Loans

Each interlibrary loan will incur a charge of 1.50 euros per item. This applies to processed requests made by any external member of the library, whether individual or institutional, whether or not the request can be fulfilled successfully. Students registered at Freie Universität Berlin will only be charged for each successful interlibrary loan.

Making Payments Online (no Cash Payments in Person)

All fees and charges incurred at Freie Universität Berlin libraries can be paid by bank transfer to the account below. Please note it may take several days for payments to show up on your account.

If you incur charges of 10.00 euros or more, your account will be temporarily frozen and you will not be able to borrow any further items.

Please note that for other types of fees (e.g., costs for interlibrary loans from abroad), the libraries will provide a specific purpose of payment (Verwendungszweck)  that you will need to indicate when making a bank transfer.
