Freie Universität Berlin has been awarded the status of a German University of Excellence. We maintain a strong international network with more than 100 bilateral partnerships worldwide and more than 340 university partnerships within the ERASMUS mobility network. As an international network university we are especially interested in shaping the international discourse on sustainability in higher education institutions together with our four strategic partners in the University Alliance for Sustainability.
Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, founded in 1918 and opened officially in 1925, is Israel’s premier university. It encourages multi-disciplinary activities and serves as a bridge between academic research and its social and industrial applications. A special emphasis is put on collaboration in the promotion of junior scholars. This aim is increasingly pursued through the PhD exchange via the UAS. The Hebrew University and Freie Universität have been partners since 1986.
Peking University, China
Peking University is the first modern national university in China, established in 1898. In 1981, the first ever German-Chinese university accord was signed by Peking University and Freie Universität. Along with the German Studies Center in Beijing and the Confucius Institute of Freie Universität, the university’s current membership in the University Alliance of Sustainability serves as one of the partnership’s cornerstones.
St. Petersburg State University, Russia
Founded in 1724, St. Petersburg State University is the oldest institution of higher education in Russia. Freie Universität was the first West German university to sign an agreement of cooperation with the then-named Leningrad State University in 1968. Ever since, an elaborate partnership has developed, which includes numerous bilateral connections, joint projects and establishments. Since 2015, these are expanded through cooperation within the area of sustainability.
University of British Columbia, Canada
The University of British Columbia (UBC) is a global center for research and teaching, consistently ranked among the 40 best universities in the world. It is a place where innovative ideas are nurtured in a globally connected research community, providing unparalleled opportunities to learn, discover and contribute in one’s own way. In 2014, the UBC and Freie Universität became strategic partners and expanded their successful cooperation within the framework of the University Alliance for Sustainability.
