The hedgehog in view - wildlife and nature conservation in big cities
Una Europa Lecture: Berlin Science Week 2024 "Wildlife in big cities - how can nature conservation succeed in urban areas?"
News from Nov 11, 2024
On November 1st 2024, an exciting lecture discussion took place at Berlin Science Week, where wild animals and their protection in large cities were discussed under the moderation of Sophie Lokatis (FU Berlin). The hedgehog, once a symbol of the biodiversity of our cultural landscape, now has a hard time in the countryside and has become rare there. As Germany's Animal of the Year 2024, it has become the central figure in a discussion about urban nature conservation. The Una Europa Lecture will shed light on the possibilities and difficulties of protecting wild animals in urban areas. The experiences of the three speakers, who deal with the paradox of nature conservation, wildlife and large cities, intersect on the topic of hedgehogs. The guests were Dr. Tanja Straka, head of the Urban Ecology research group at FU Berlin, urban ecologist Dr. Leon Barthel and urban wildlife PhD student Simon Mösch. Since 2021, the FU Berlin has been committed to creating a campus suitable for hedgehogs through the Network Hedgehog Tunnel and is strengthening coexistence with wild animals for more biodiversity.
