Avi Lifschitz joins echo as a visiting fellow from October 2025 to June 2026

Avi Lifschitz is Professor of Intellectual History and Enlightenment Studies at the University of Oxford, where he is Fellow and Tutor in History at Magdalen College. His book The Last Philosopher-King? Frederick the Great as Enlightenment Author is forthcoming from Princeton University Press. He has written on the intellectual and cultural history of eighteenth-century Europe, the reception of ancient ideas, knowledge transfer and theories of language and semiotics. Past research fellowships include the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, the Clark Library at UCLA, CRAASH at the University of Cambridge, the Enlightenment Research Centre (IZEA) at the University of Halle and EXC 2020 (Temporal Communities) at the Freie Universität Berlin. He has been awarded grants by the Leverhulme Trust and the Thyssen Stiftung, as well as the 2020 James L. Clifford Prize of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies.
