Freie Universität Berlin is a dynamic university and one of eleven universities in Germany awarded Excellence status in the Germany-wide competition to promote top research at German universities. Freie Universität was selected not only for its future development concept "International Network University." With five graduate schools and three clusters in addition to the development concept, it was the most successful university to win funding in this prestigious national competition.

Freie Universität has been internationally oriented since its founding in 1948, and the university works systematically to expand its global networks. These include more than 100 university-wide international partnerships with academic institutions and seven liaison offices on four continents. Its main campus is located in Berlin-Dahlem, a district with a long tradition for outstanding science. Where Nobel Prize winners such as Albert Einstein and Otto Hahn conducted pioneering research, scholars from Freie Universität work closely together with regional, national, and international partners from the academic world, industry, politics, and society.

Freie Universität focuses its expertise in cutting-edge research. In five interdisciplinary Focus Areas, researchers work on socially relevant, transdisciplinary issues. Fields of research promising for the future are developed in research clusters and other alliances. At the same time Freie Universität cultivates its enormous diversity in research and teaching. As a classic full university it offers over 150 degree programs across a wide range of subjects. The extent of its research in the humanities and social sciences is unique in Germany.

Freie Universität provides targeted support for young researchers. Many innovative and structured doctoral programs are comprised under the umbrella of Dahlem Research School, which serves as a framework that encompasses outstanding graduate programs. Graduate students working toward a doctorate can acquire excellent, structured training, as well as additional skills that optimally prepare them for a career in leadership positions.
