Biodiversity, Evolution & Ecology

Research Focus

The graduate program “Biodiversity, Evolution and Ecology” was established in December 2015 with a focus on biodiversity related research at Freie Universität Berlin (FU). The graduate program is embedded in the FU’s Department of Biology and the Berlin-Brandenburg Institute of Advanced Biodiversity Research (BBIB, www.bbib.org). Thirteen research groups at different institutions cooperate for the program. The purpose of the Graduate Program "Biodiversity, Evolution and Ecology" is to educate the next generation of biodiversity researchers and imbue them with a broad understanding of biodiversity science, an unprecedented toolbox of quantitative skills and a spirit of cooperation and networking. PhD students enrolled in the graduate program could benefit from the close connection of the BBIB institutions, resulting in an exciting and interesting research environment with a huge diversity in theoretical and methodological competencies. PhD projects within the graduate program should meet the bridging element between disciplines, scales and systems in biodiversity research.
