“Greece’s Jews: History, Anti-Semitism, and Collective Memory”

CeMoG Lecture on November 28, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. at Freie Universität Berlin (in Greek with interpretation into German)

№ 357/2019 from Nov 21, 2019

On November 28, Freie Universität’s Center for Modern Greece will hold its sixth CeMoG Lecture, this year with a focus on the history and culture of Greek Jews. David Saltiel, president of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece and of the Jewish Community in Thessaloniki, will speak on the history of the Holocaust and anti-Semitism in present-day Greece. He will also talk about the relationship Greek Jews have to Germany and the plans for a Holocaust museum in Thessaloniki. The Jewish community in Thessaloniki was considered the largest in Europe up until the Germans occupied Greece in 1941. The city became known as “Madre d’Israel” because the majority of its population were Jews. The lecture will be held in Greek with simultaneous interpretation into German provided. Please register in advance at: https://ssl2.cms.fu-berlin.de/cemog/aktivitaeten/anmeldung/PM-anmeldung-cemog-lecture/index.html.

David Saltiel, born 1947, has been president of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki since 2001. In 2010, he was elected president of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece, a position he still holds today. Saltiel’s work for a culture of remembrance in the Greek-Jewish community has earned him major international recognition, such as the titles “Cavalliere” by the Italian government and “Chevalier” in the French Legion of Honor. He also received an Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Center for Modern Greece (CeMoG) promotes dialogue between Germany and Greece as well as cooperation between the two countries in the areas of research and education. The center organizes events related to Greece, publishes Greek literature and literature about Greece in German, and studies German-Greek relations.
