The Many Languages of Berlin

Linguistic diversity and language variation in Berlin are the focus of a public event on November 14, at 8:00 p.m. at the Heinrich Böll Library located in Berlin’s Pankow district. The event will bring together experts from linguistics, cultural studies, and social anthropology for a discussion based on their presentations of different language practices and contexts in Berlin milieus and social domains. The experts’ work on the topic has been collected in a volume entitled The Sociolinguistic Economy of Berlin. The volume’s editors, Prof. Dr. Britta Schneider (Europa-Universität Viadrina Frankfurt/Oder), Prof. Dr. Theresa Heyd (Universität Greifswald), and Prof. Dr. Ferdinand von Mengden (Freie Universität Berlin), are organizing the event. It will be held in German, and admission is free of charge.
The event will focus in particular on languages often used in Berlin, like English and Spanish, as well as less visible languages, such as Kurdish or Vietnamese. The discussion will also address German language variations, such as the Berlin dialect and the urban dialect “Kiezdeutsch” (neighborhood German).
The volume The Sociolinguistic Economy of Berlin is the result of research presented at the 2016 conference of the same name, which took place at Freie Universität Berlin and was organized by Britta Schneider, Theresa Heyd, and Ferdinand von Mengden.
