Supporting Academic Freedom

16th Conference of the International Dialogue on Education to Address Academic Freedom on October 28, 2019, in Berlin

№ 276/2019 from Sep 24, 2019

Academic freedom and the responsibility of universities to promote it is the focus of a discussion to be held October 28 at the Canadian Embassy in Berlin. To mark the 70th anniversary of the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany, which guarantees academic freedom in both research and teaching, representatives from universities in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Federal Republic of Germany will meet to discuss the current situation in their countries and worldwide. One topic will be how international cooperation projects deal with different ideas about academic freedom as well as with different societal framework conditions. The 16th International Dialogue on Education (ID-E Berlin) conference is entitled “Supporting Academic Freedom in International Cooperation and at Home.” It will take place in English on October 28 from 2 to 5:30 p.m. in the Canadian Embassy in Berlin. Advance registration is requested: www.id-e-berlin.de.

How can academic freedom in research and teaching be safeguarded in the context of changing university landscapes and diverse societies? What challenges do universities face in national or international cooperation? How can universities reconcile institutional and individual interests if meanings and interpretations of academic freedom deviate from their own point of view?

These questions will be discussed in a panel discussion moderated by Jan-Martin Wiarda, a journalist specialized in research and education.

Participants:

  • Fiona Beveridge, Executive Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Liverpool
  • Molly O’Neal, Adjunct Assistant Professor and Professional Lecturer of Political Science, Baylor University and University of Texas Austin
  • James Turk, Director, Centre for Free Expression und Distinguished Visiting Professor, Ryerson University
  • Günter M. Ziegler, Professor of Mathematics and President of Freie Universität Berlin

The International Dialogue on Education (ID-E Berlin) conference series is a joint initiative of the British Council, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the German-American Fulbright Commission, the Embassy of Canada in Germany, and Freie Universität Berlin. Its aim is to broaden and improve debates on science, research, and higher education in dialogue with international partners.
