Scholars of Iranian Studies to Meet in Dahlem

International Conference from September 9 to 13, 2019, at Freie Universität Berlin

№ 214/2019 from Jul 11, 2019

From September 9 to 13, an international conference will be held at Freie Universität Berlin, where scholars will discuss Iranian cultures, literary traditions, and history. This year’s European Conference of Iranian Studies (ECIS9) is being organized by researchers from the Institute of Iranian Studies on behalf of the Societas Iranologica Europaea (SIE). It is the ninth iteration of the conference, taking place in Berlin for the first time. The Belgian scholar Jean Kellens (Collège de France) will open the conference with a keynote lecture on the Gathas, the oldest collection of texts within the Zoroastrian tradition. The conference is open to the public. Registration fees are 125.00 euros for SIE members, 175.00 euros for non-members, and 70.00 euros for students. Please register for the conference online at  https://ecis9.com/. The event is multilingual with presentations and discussions in German, English, French, and Persian.

Conference participants include specialists on a wide range of topics from Iranian studies, spanning different periods and drawing from interdisciplinary approaches. Other keynote presentations will address the Anvār-e Sohayli, a Persian adaptation of the Kalila wa-Dimna fable composed in Timurid Herat, as well as presentations on the impact of Iranian artists, cultural developments in the Iranian-speaking world, and the origins of Oriental studies.

Societas Iranologica Europaea (SIE) was founded in Rome in 1983 and is an international academic association for Iranian studies. The association supports researchers working on old, middle, and modern Iranian languages, in addition to scholars studying Iranian-speaking people, their history, social structures, cultures, religions, and literary works, stretching back almost 3000 years. The scope of the research covers a geographic area that extends well beyond the current borders of modern Iran. The SIE hopes to facilitate international exchanges between researchers and to raise public awareness of the topics they discuss and their findings.
