Research on the Ancient Near East
International, interdisciplinary conference for doctoral students and early-career researchers from June 24 to 28, 2019
№ 182/2019 from Jun 17, 2019
An international conference to be held at Freie Universität Berlin from June 24 to 28, 2019, will focus on the history of the Near East in antiquity. The conference, entitled “Broadening Horizons – Bridging the Gap: Disciplines, Times, and Spaces in Dialogue,” will be hosted by the Institute for Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology and the Institute for Ancient Near Eastern Studies and is intended primarily for early-career researchers and graduate students from different disciplines who deal with the ancient Near East. The goal is to promote scientific exchange in order to bridge the gap between written sources and the archaeological record. The participants will discuss issues related to material culture and written sources, landscape archaeology, and art history, in addition to new theories, innovative methods, modern research techniques, and current topics related to cultural heritage.
The conference at the Freie Universität Berlin is part of an international series dedicated to graduate students and early-stage researchers studying the Ancient Near East from the prehistoric period to the Islamic era. Previous conferences under the aegis of “Broadening Horizons” took place in Ghent (2006), Lyon (2007), Barcelona (2010), Turin (2011), and Udine (2017). The framework provides an important opportunity for graduate students and scholars in the early stages of their career from all over the world to present their own research or to attend papers presented by both their peers and more experienced colleagues.
The international conference is being sponsored by the Division of International Affairs at Freie Universität, the Ernst Reuter Society, and the German Research Foundation (DFG).
