Matthias Rillig Named Fellow of Ecological Society of America
Freie Universität biology professor honored by the North American ecological association

The Ecological Society of America (ESA) named Prof. Dr. Matthias Rillig as one of its 2019 fellows. The biology professor at Freie Universität Berlin was acknowledged for his exceptional contributions in plant-soil-microbial ecology and his discoveries in ecosystem processes. The ESA also praised his work in promoting international cooperation and supporting early-career researchers. Founded in 1915, the ESA is a professional association of ecologists in the USA and Canada. The ESA fellows program recognizes individuals for their scientific achievements in the field of ecology by making them lifetime members of the society. The fellows program started in 2012.
Prof. Dr. Matthias Rillig (born in 1968) studied in Kaiserslautern and Edinburgh. He completed his Ph.D. from the University of California at Davis in 1997. He later conducted research at the Carnegie Institution for Science (formerly, Carnegie Institution of Washington) in Stanford, California. Rillig was a professor at the University of Montana from 1999 to 2007. He has taught and researched at Freie Universität Berlin as a professor of plant ecology since 2007. Scientists from over 20 different countries are currently conducting research in his lab. Rillig is also the director of the Berlin-Brandenburg Institute of Advanced Biodiversity Research and an elected member of the German Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv). Rillig has recently conducted studies on microplastics in soil and terrestrial ecosystems.
