Communication Studies Scholar Radha Hegde from New York University is Visiting Professor of Gender Studies

Radha Hegde, Professor of Media, Culture and Communication, at New York University (NYU) has been appointed the International Visiting Professor of Gender Studies at Freie Universität Berlin for the spring/summer semester. Professor Hegde explores issues of gender, media flows, globalization, and migration. One particular focus is activism in digital media both in India and worldwide, and another is the emergence of diaspora cultures under the conditions of digitalization and globalization. After studying English literature in India, Professor Hegde worked as a journalist for a national English-language newspaper in India, and she will incorporate this practical experience in her courses at Freie Universität Berlin. On April 24, at 6 p.m., she will give a public inaugural lecture at the Harnack-Haus of the Max Planck Society. The lecture will address border regimes and border crossings. The lecture is public, and admission is free.
In her research and teaching, Professor Hegde focuses on the multifaceted relationships between the production and use of media and the changes in social coexistence worldwide. In her seminars at Freie Universität Berlin, she will deal with narrating migration and how ideas about mobility or diaspora are shaped worldwide. One of her courses will address gender and gender theories in the context of globalization.
Professor Hegde will also continue her own research projects at Freie Universität Berlin, working closely with scholars at the Institute for Media and Communication Studies at Freie Universität as well as the Collaborative Research Center “Affective Societies. Dynamics of social coexistence in mobile worlds.” She will be working closely with the Margherita von Brentano Center for Gender Studies at Freie Universität. The interdisciplinary Brentano Center presents and connects gender studies at Freie Universität Berlin, organizes events, and expands cooperation with institutional partners at both the international and national levels.
Gender equality and the promotion of gender studies have been firmly rooted in the ethos of Freie Universität Berlin for more than three decades. They are central features of the university’s institutional strategy, which in 2012 won Freie Universität Berlin excellence status in the German government’s Excellence Initiative funding program for universities.
The Dahlem International Network Professorship for Gender Studies was established in this context. It has been announced annually since 2013 and is awarded to a scholar with an outstanding reputation in this field. It supports activities aimed at strengthening the international orientation of gender research at Freie Universität.
The Dahlem International Network Professorship for Gender Studies was awarded for the first time in the 2013/14 winter semester to the Canadian political scientist and Latin America expert Professor Dr. Verónica Schild. The following years it went to the Iranian archaeologist Leila Papoli Yazdi, the Romanian health expert Irina Catrinel Crăciun, the Korean sustainability researcher Pilwha Chang, the U.K.-based economist Elisabeth Kelan, and the American literary scholar Moira Fradinger.
