Under Pressure

Public Panel Discussion on Challenges Facing the European Union: February 12 at 6 p.m. at Freie Universität Berlin

№ 029/2019 from Feb 01, 2019

A public panel discussion to be held at 6 p.m. on February 12 at Freie Universität Berlin will address challenges facing the European Union (EU). The discussion, which is entitled Under Pressure — Zur Zukunft der Europäischen Union, will focus on perspectives for EU reform and on shaping European integration in light of increasing polarization in European political debate. The panelists are the representative of the European Commission in Germany, Laura Bethke; the deputy chairperson of the Young European Movement, Katja Sinko; and the British correspondent of the Deutsche Welle, Benjamin Knight. The discussion will be moderated by political scientist Prof. Dr. Tanja Börzel. Advance registration is requested by February 11 via email to info@eu-infozentrum-berlin.de; admission is free. The discussion will be in German.

In France the yellow vests movement is protesting against the policies of President Emmanuel Macron, who started with an ambitious pro-European program. March 29, the date scheduled for the planned withdrawal of Britain from the EU is approaching, and exit plans are also being proclaimed in other EU countries. Rule of law proceedings of the European Commission are ongoing against Poland and Hungary, and the Italian government is openly agitating against the EU. The upcoming elections in May 2019 raise the issue of how the EU is dealing with these challenges.

The panel discussion is taking place as part of the series Berliner Europa-Dialog, which is being organized jointly by the United Nations and European Union Documentation Center at Freie Universität Berlin, the Europäisches Informationszentrum Berlin, and the Europa-Union Berlin e. V.
