Excercise Bicycle in Library

Excercise Bike that Produces Electricity Set Up for Students to Test in Philological Library of Freie Universität

№ 013/2019 from Jan 14, 2019

Since January 10, users of the Philological Library at Freie Universität Berlin have a new possibility for exercising while studying. At the recommendation of a library staff member, Janet Wagner, a bicycle ergometer was placed in the lounge area of the fourth floor of the library. Library users can get a little exercise during study breaks or even while reading. The exercise is also good for the environment: when someone is pedaling, the bicycle ergometer generates electricity sufficient for charging smartphones or other mobile devices. In a pilot test phase the fitness cycle, produced by the Belgian company WeWatt, can be used until mid-February during the regular opening hours of the library.

During a four-week test phase, the library staff wants to gather students’ opinions on the exercise bike and evaluate its use. The reactions on the Facebook page of the Philological Library were already very positive. This type of exercise bike can already be found at many airports, train stations, or exhibition centers. Library employee Janet Wagner got the idea to set up a fitness bike in the Philological Library when she was at Schipol Airport in Amsterdam. She developed the concept in her bachelor’s thesis, written while she continued to work. Wagner said that many scientific studies have already shown that short, easy movement units have a positive effect on concentration and attention. The fitness bike in the library is intended to make it more attractive to study in the library and to support students in learning more effectively.
