European Values under Pressure?
Public Panel Discussion on Rule of Law in Poland and Europe: January 16, 6 p.m., at Freie Universität Berlin

A public panel discussion to be held on January 16 at Freie Universität Berlin will address the relationship between the Republic of Poland and European institutions as well as the controversy over constitutional reforms in Poland. The discussion is being organized by scholars from the International Research Training Group Human Rights under Pressure — Ethics, Law and Politics at Freie Universität Berlin and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The Polish Ombudsman for Fundamental and Human Rights, Dr. Adam Bodnar, will discuss the issue along with European law scholar Mattias Wendel (Bielefeld) and the historian Anna Delius (Berlin). The panel discussion will be moderated by legal scholar Sinthiou Buszewski from Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. The discussion will take place in English. It is public, and admission is free. No registration needed.
According to researchers, in some European countries the significance of values such as the rule of law is being renegotiated. One example is the Republic of Poland, whose government is trying to influence the appointment procedure and organization of the judiciary. This has led to a growing polarization between Poland the European institutions since the parliamentary elections of 2015 and the government has been controlled solely by the national-conservative PiS party. This development presents Europe with new challenges: How are values such as “rule of law” defined by national and European institutions? What sort of structure exists for exchange with regard to these issues, and can changes be understood in comparative and historical terms? What role does legislation play in this context?
