Break or Make Moment for Europe – Europe before the elections in 2019

Panel discussion at Freie Universität with researcher and activist Prof. Dr. Alberto Alemanno on January 17, 2019, to address transnational political movements and parties in Europe

On January 17 the prominent legal scholar, journalist, and political activist Prof. Dr. Alberto Alemanno will be a guest at a panel discussion at Freie Universität Berlin. The panelists will discuss the upcoming European elections in May. A researcher at École des Hautes Études Commerciales de Paris (HEC), Alemanno will debate with students about democratic reforms of the European Union and weigh the enforceability of these reforms. Above all, the discussion will focus on a new phenomenon, which has recently received a great deal of attention, namely the founding of transnational political movements and parties, such as the European Spring founded by Yanis Varoufakis and Benoît Hamon. An important issue is whether these new initiatives can arouse the interest of European citizens and remedy an often cited “democratic deficit” of the EU. The discussion is being organized by the Otto Suhr Institute of Freie Universität Berlin in cooperation with the École des Hautes Études Commerciales de Paris. As an activist and internationally recognized legal scholar, Prof. Dr. Alberto Alemanno is involved in campaigns for the democratization of the European Union. He developed the idea of the citizen lobby, a strong, independent representation of the interests of all European citizens. Alemanno founded and supports numerous initiatives and nongovernmental organizations, including Good Lobby, We Move, and European Alternatives. Their goal is to uphold or extend the rights of Europeans and to give all citizens more opportunities to participate at all political levels. Alemanno has participated in numerous campaigns, for example, he called for the reduction of roaming charges for the use of mobile phones abroad, which has now been implemented, and for protection for whistleblowers. Prof. Dr. Alberto Alemanno conducts research and teaches European and international law at HEC Paris and the New York School of Law. He also holds visiting professorships at the University of Tokyo and the College of Europe. His initiatives are often taken up and discussed by international media. He is a regular contributor to Le Monde, Bloomberg, Politico Europe, and Forbes. In 2015 he was named Young Global Leader and invited to the World Economic Forum Davos, Switzerland.
