Three Public Lecture Series to Start in April at Freie Universität

Three new public lecture series will be held throughout the 2018 summer semester at Freie Universität Berlin as part of the Open Lecture Series. Each week highly regarded scholars from Germany and abroad will present topics in the fields of religious studies, Romance languages and literatures, and English language and literature. All of the lectures are open to the public. Admission is free, and registration is not required.
Beginning April 16, 2018, scholars from different disciplines will give lectures relating to the power of the dead (series title: Die Macht der Toten: Geschichte, Politik, Literatur), which is being held by the international research group Deploying the Dead (Deepdead) at the Institute of English Language and Literature, Freie Universität. A lecture series about women writers who won Nobel Prizes in Literature will begin April 17, 2018 (series title: Nobelpreisträgerinnen: 14 Schriftstellerinnen im Porträt). This series is being organized by the Institute of Romance Languages and Literatures and the Peter Szondi Institute of Comparative Literature, Freie Universität Berlin. The third public lecture series is being held by the Institute of Religious Studies, Freie Universität. Entitled Ex-zentrische Religion. Transformationen des Religiösen in Literatur, Philosophie und Kunst, it will begin April 18, 2018.

- To start off the series, Prof. Dr. Andrew James Johnston from the Institute of English Language and Literature, Freie Universität Berlin, will speak on the hill of the dragon in Beowulf (lecture title: “Der Drachenhügel in Beowulf. Von der Mehrfachnutzung eines Grabes”).

Women Who Won the Nobel Prize in Literature
(Nobelpreisträgerinnen: 14 Schriftstellerinnen im Porträt)
- Tuesdays, 6:15 to 7:45 p.m.; first lecture: April 17, 2018.
- Conception: Prof. Dr. Claudia Olk and Prof. Dr. Susanne Zepp
- The first lecture will be given by Prof. Dr. Stefanie von Schnurbein from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin on the Swedish author Selma Lagerlöf. It will be given in cooperation with the Dag Hammarskjöld Lecture at the Department of Northern European Studies, Humboldt-Universität.

- The first lecture of the series will be given by the philosopher Prof. Dr. Manfred Sommer von der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (lecture title: Zeit. Wie der Bewusstseinsstrom entspringt und versickert).
