QS Ranking of Best Student Cities: Berlin at Top

Place 1 in Germany and Place 8 Worldwide of Most Attractive Locations for Students – Freie Universität Berlin Important Factor in City’s Popularity

№ 30/2012 from Feb 15, 2012

According to a study by Quacquarelli Symonds, the organization that regularly publishes the QS World University Ranking, Berlin is one of the most attractive cities worldwide for students. In the most recent evaluation, the German capital is the eighth most popular university city in the world, making it the most attractive  in Germany followed by Munich at place 13 worldwide. No other German city was included in the top 50 in the world. One factor in the evaluation is how the universities in the various cities were ranked in the QS University Rankings.

Freie Universität contributed to Berlin's good standing. In the QS World University Ranking im September 2011 Freie Universität reached place 66 worldwide and place four in Germany. It was the only university in Berlin to be among the top 100. Only four of the nine winning universities in the German government's Excellence Initiative were among the best 100 in the world. The good academic reputation of the various disciplines at Freie Universität as well as the university's improved image among prospective employers were important factors for its good standing.

In another QS Ranking in 2011, the assessment of individual subjects at Freie Universität was very good. In the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) ranking published in October 2011, Freie Universität was one of the best. As THE announced in London, Freie Universität reached place 151 in a global comparison, place 61 in Europe, and place 6 in Germany.
