Professor Thomas Südhof, a native of Germany, attended medical school at the University of Göttingen and also completed a doctorate there in 1982. As a postdoctoral researcher he went to the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, where he taught and conducted research for many years.

In 2008 he was appointed a professor at Stanford University in California, and in 2013 he won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. As of the fall of 2014, he will be a Visiting Fellow at the Berlin Institute of Health.
