Online-Panel: "Beyond Interculturality: Rethinking Cultural Encounters in COIL"
We are pleased to announce our upcoming panel on cultural encounters in COIL teaching ! COIL practitioners from 𝐀𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐚, 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲, 𝐆𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐚, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐮 will discuss: Power dynamics in postcolonial and Global North–South collaborations The dominance of English and Western knowledge systems Gender and other structural inequalities in COIL Rethinking “intercultural exchange” and “intercultural competence” The panel will explore how COIL can move beyond essentialist cultural models and open space for other forms of cultural learning—less about mastering knowledge of “other cultures” and more about engaging with friction, diversity, and the shifting boundaries of one’s own cultural self-understanding. It asks how we can address structural imbalances while upholding the equality of all students and educators.
