Urgent call: CARPO offers travel funds for postdocs and professors for conference "Advancing the Policy Relevance of Gender Studies at Aden University" in Amman, 14-15 Dec 2025

News from Dec 03, 2025

The Center for Applied Research in Partnership with the Orient (CARPO) offers travel funds for the German-Yemeni conference “Advancing the Policy Relevance of Gender Studies at Aden University” in Amman, Jordan, 14–15 December 2025.

Who can apply: Postdocs and professors affiliated with the Berlin University Alliance or at German institutions
What is covered: Travel, accommodation
How to apply: Please send a short expression of interest and your CV ASAP to heinze@carpo-bonn.org
Deadline: asap

CARPO is looking for contributors to a conference organized within the framework of a DAAD-funded short-term measure to support its project partner, the Woman Research & Training Center (WRTC) at the University of Aden, Yemen, in the further development of its master’s program (and the new development of a PhD program) on gender and development. More information on this cooperation can be found on the CARPO website.

Travel to and accommodation in Amman will be covered through the project.

The conference is designed to contribute to the development of a course syllabus (usually 16 sessions plus a group research exercise at the end) on the following three topics: economic development, governance, and climate change. In addition to staff from WRTC, Yemeni think-tank researchers specialized in these topics will also take part in the conference, as the project is designed to focus on the policy relevance of the teaching. At the same time, the staff from WRTC have requested that CARPO invite experts who can speak about new theories and methodologies, as they have not had the chance to interact with international researchers since the beginning of the conflict in Yemen in 2014/15. You would be meeting highly engaged professors who have continued to provide higher education at the University of Aden with no or very limited salaries over the past ten years of conflict in Yemen.

CARPO is looking for advanced researchers at German institutions who can provide input on one of the following three topics from a theoretical, comparative, and methodological perspective (a gender lens would be welcome but is not required):

  • Development economics

  • Governance in fragile states; state-building in post-conflict settings

  • Climate change / environmental governance in developing countries

At the conference, your input would provide suggestions for 3–5 sessions within such a master’s/PhD course that would lay the theoretical and methodological foundations from international research before the more Yemen-focused sessions begin (which would be designed by the Yemeni conference participants).

Interested? Please send a short expression of interest and your CV ASAP to heinze@carpo-bonn.org
