Una Europa Seed Funding 2026

Ten projects receive funding up to 40,000 € in the current round of Una Europa Seed Funding. Three of those projects have participation from researches of Freie Universität Berlin.

ALMATCLEAN: An Interdisciplinary Alliance on Materials for Clean Energy

This project sees the participation of Prof. Dr. Beate Paulus from the field of Theoretical Chemistry. Coordinated by the University of Edinburgh, this project aims to establish an interdisciplinary network of researchers that addresses the challenges of clean energy transition by developing innovative materials. These are, for example, fuel cells, batteries, and polymers. ALMATCLEAN features researchers from Una Europa partner universities from the fields of chemistry, physics, engineering, materials science, and data science.

Democracy and AI

This Una Europa Seed Funding project is organized with the participation of Prof. Dr. Bruno Castanho Silva of the working group on Empirical Methods at the Institute of Sociology. The project is coordinated by Universiteit Leiden and University College Dublin. The focus of the collaboration is understanding the implications of AI use in political communication on democratic systems. Democracy and AI Expertise will combine expert knowledge from political science, communication studies, and computer science.

WATCH: Web Tracking and Algorithmic Profiling – Trends, Challenges, Horizons

With the participation of Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Vitaly Belik of FU Berlin's Department of Veterinary Medicine, the Una Europa Seed Funding project WATCH explores the collection of behavioural data, user profiling, and content personalisation through web tracking technologies. The project is coordinated by Universiteit Leiden and brings together researchers from Una Europa partner universities from the fields of computer science, data science, communication, media studies and law.
