Onboarding and Retaining New (International) Staff Members: Building Your Toolkit

Staff engagement and retention begins with a great onboarding process. This is especially true for new international staff members. On top of starting a new job, colleagues from abroad also have to navigate a new country, culture and language. This track of FUB’s International Staff Training Week is aimed at university professionals working in HR, Staff Development and International Departments who support new (international) staff members as they settle into their position and guide them in their development within the university.

We will take a closer look at the onboarding process and the factors that make it successful as well as at measures to combat a high staff turnover rate. We’ll delve into staff retention methods, including development opportunities and benefits that universities can offer to ensure staff engagement. We’ll also explore different ways of specifically supporting international staff, from Welcome Services to intercultural trainings in a university context.

Our aim is to create ample opportunities to share ideas and learn from one another, so the program will consist of a mix of inputs from FUB staff as well as participant presentations on best practice examples from their home institutions. You’ll be leaving with a toolkit of onboarding and staff retention methods to implement at your university.
