In a participatory process with a total of 370 stakeholders, including academics, students, young people, and representatives from various sectors of Berlin society, the Berlin University Alliance selected "Responsible Innovation in Times of Transformation" as the Next Grand Challenge. Following the Call: "BUA Calling. Your topic for Berlin's cutting-edge research", a total of 43 proposals were received, grouped into five themes.

The newly created third Grand Challenge "Responsible Innovation in Times of Transformation" complements the first two Grand Challenge initiatives "Social Cohesion" and "Global Health". Society is facing challenges and crises for which we need solutions and innovations, both on a technical and a social level. The challenge is to deal responsibly and sustainably with our living environment and to use innovation to create solutions for people. Once again, there will be calls for projects within the Grand Challenge to bring the topic to life.
