Exhibition on Chemical Disaster in Bhopal

25 Years after the Industrial Disaster: University Library of Freie Universität Berlin Exhibit Provides Insight into Causes, Effects, and Protest Movements

№ 159/2009 from Jun 18, 2009

"Bhopal 1984 – The Chemical Catastrophe. 25 Years of Waiting for Justice" is the name of an exhibition in the foyer of the university library of Freie Universität Berlin. The exhibition opening will be on Monday, June 22 at 5:00 p.m.  It will remain open until September 2.

The background for this exhibition was the chemical accident in the northern Indian city of Bhopal. In 1984 highly toxic industrial gases were released from an American chemical factory. The death toll reached roughly 30,000 and 500,000 victims suffered injuries. The Amnesty International university group of Freie Universität aims, in cooperation with Greenpeace, to draw attention to the fact that today, 25 years after the catastrophe occurred, the accident site has not yet been decontaminated and those affected have not been adequately compensated.
