The award was presented by the Department of Philosophy and Humanities in a public ceremony on June 9, 2015.

With this award the Department expressed recognition for White's contributions to the analysis of the rhetorical and narrative structures of (German) historical writing of the 19th century.

White’s Metahistory: The Historical Imagination in Nineteenth-Century Europe (1973) influenced generations of scholars.

Professor Hayden White has long maintained close academic connections to Berlin. In recent years he was a visiting professor at the Graduate School of North American Studies at the John F. Kennedy Institute and a Fellow at the American Academy.
