Comments
This BA seminar explores the cultural and philosophical dimensions of broadcasting through the lens of Paddy Scannell’s influential work Television and the Meaning of Live. We will examine how the experience of “liveness” has shaped our understanding of time, presence, and shared reality in mass media. Special attention will be given to the historical development of television, its role in everyday life, and its transformation in the digital age. Through critical readings and discussion, we will collectively engage with core concepts of media phenomenology and reflect on how live media events continue to influence public consciousness and social cohesion. Every session will be dedicated to a specific chapter or part of the book, which will be read closely, embedded in its historical and theoretical context to clarify its meaning, understand its references and tangents, and discussed in light of our current more digital, non-linear media system. close
