Popular Culture: Interceptions between Popcultural Phenomenon and Communication Studies

Our perception of reality is in large parts constructed by what we consume through media. However, this doesn’t only concern news media but also items of popular culture and entertainment. Popular culture is more than just entertainment—it is a central arena in which questions of identity, power, and social change are negotiated. This seminar explores contemporary phenomena in popular culture through the lens of communication studies, with a focus on how media practices shape cultural meaning, public debates, and social belonging.
The seminar is organized in different thematic blocks that will take a closer look at different phenomena within Popular Culture: Amongst others these thematic the seminar will highlight phenomena around Fan Culture and Participation, Activism and Representation, Gender and Popular Culture, as well as (generative) AI and Emerging Culture.
As regular assigned presentations („Referate“) are not part of the course itinerary the course structure relies on the students participation in class discussions. Thus, the participants must be willing to read the required texts for the course as they are essential for the individual sessions and group discussions. The goal of the course is for the students to engage with each other in class and talk about popular culture within an academic context.
Throughout the seminar, the students will critically analyze case studies from film, television, social media, music, and digital culture, connecting them to broader debates in communication and cultural theory. Activities will combine scholarly readings, collaborative discussions, and creative group projects that encourage reflexivity and analytical precision. close
