Seminar
(S) VM: The past, present and future of Japanese capitalism
Steffen Richard Heinrich
Comments
This advanced module explores the development and transformation of Japan’s post-war economic system. It examines how Japan’s model of capitalism enabled rapid growth with broad social inclusion, while also facing increasing criticism from the 1980s onwards for its inefficiencies and inequalities. Students will analyse key phases of institutional change—from the post-war boom and the neoliberal turn to recent debates about a “new capitalism”. The course adopts a multidisciplinary perspective, addressing economic, political, and social dimensions of Japan’s evolving economic order. close
