AM: The West and the East, Rearmament and Antimilitarism, Self and Other: Japan’s international relations „in-between“
Erik Isaksson
Comments
Perceptions in the “West” of Japan's international relations are characterized by simplistic contrasts. Does Japan belong to the “West” or the “East”? Is it peaceful or militaristic? Progressive or conservative? In times of increasing tensions in international politics, these perceptions form a building block for how we approach Japan - a country that is often seen as an important security and economic partner to Europe. In this course, we will use theories and perspectives in the field of International Relations (IR) to discuss what “our” images of Japan on the one hand and “domestic” images of Japan on the other - and the interplay between them - mean for international relations. To this end we will read texts from the field of IR and related fields, but also use other media to identify images that are deeply rooted in society. close
