Hallyu in Practice: Methods of Cultural Inquiry

Gwendolyn Domning Sookung Jung

Comments

This course centers on hands-on research and the practical application of methods through the lens of the Korean Wave (Hallyu). Students will actively engage with a range of qualitative and exploratory research approaches to investigate how cultural phenomena related to Korea can be observed, documented, and analyzed in real-world contexts. Key methodological tools introduced and practiced include: -interviews with consumers, fans, or professionals in the cultural field, -participant observation in online or offline communities, -visual analysis of music videos, social media content, TV series, or fashion images, -and experimental or ethnographically inspired fieldwork in digital or urban environments. Students are encouraged to apply these methods in small-scale, self-directed research projects. They will develop their own research questions, engage critically with the field, reflect on their positionality as researchers, and present their findings in a variety of formats. The course places strong emphasis on practical experimentation, methodological learning, and critical reflection. It also explores how Korea and the Korean Wave function as research fields within broader cultural, global, and academic contexts—always with the goal of building methodological competence and a thoughtful approach to contemporary popular culture. close
