The geopolitical shift in international politics and the hegemonic orientation of US foreign policy under the second Trump administration pose new challenges for Latin American countries. The seminar aims to shed light on the search for answers in the region, which often relate to escaping the effects of great power competition. Although the foreign policy maxims of Latin American states for shaping the international order are primarily determined by the overarching foreign policy goal of the countries in the region to secure their autonomy, the concrete form they take varies according to national interests and economic opportunities. The individual states pursue different strategies, ranging from close ties to the Western hegemon to identification with positions from the global South. It remains unclear how the largely passive acceptance of international reality can be overcome and how the region can gain a greater role in shaping international politics. The seminar will address questions regarding the Latin American understanding of multilateralism and multipolarity, the use of the region's natural resources for an independent political role as well as the search for formats of international integration in the BRICS+ format and sub-regional cooperation. close
