Proseminar
From Disagreement to Division: Polarization and Democratic Backsliding in the U.S.
Christian Lammert
Comments
This seminar offers an in-depth analysis of the escalating political polarization in the United States and how it has contributed to democratic backsliding. Drawing on recent research, it explores the social, cultural, and institutional drivers of polarization, including ideological sorting, affective hostility across party lines, and the role of elite political strategies. Participants will examine how polarization fractures social cohesion, fosters political violence, undermines trust in democratic norms, and fuels institutional weakening—posing profound challenges to U.S. democracy in the 21st century. close
