The ideas of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels became one of the systems of thought that drove the most drastic and profound transformations of reality in all of modernity. Despite having been elaborated mainly in the heat of nineteenth-century European debates and historical experiences, these ideas found in other parts of the world not only a space for profound theoretical elaboration, but also a privileged scenario for the changes they themselves augured. From the disciplinary perspectives of history and political theory, this course addresses the way in which Marxism circulated, interpreted and put into practice in a critical manner to face certain challenges considered “specific” to the Latin American reality: the supposed modernity of the subcontinent, economic development and dependence, the role of the center and the periphery, social inequality, (anti)-imperialism and relations with the United States, the problems of the “national-popular”, patriarchy and the racial/ethnic issues. Through the analysis of primary sources and the discussion of secondary bibliography, we will review the history of translations of certain key texts of the Marxist tradition and their specific impact on Latin American debates and intellectual itineraries, as well as on some of the main socio-political transformations of the region during the 20th century. close
