Proseminar
Who rules? Elites and their networks in international comparison
Anja Osei
Comments
This seminar introduces theories and methods of elite research. It first discusses different concepts of power and elite identification – how do we know who rules, and what does that actually mean? Which role do the different forms of capital (economic, social, cultural and symbolic) play for the reproduction of inequality? While pluralist elite theories conceptualize power as decentralized and dispersed, proponents of the power elite approach argue that elites form dense networks of personal interactions that connect different sectors into a ruling class. We will critically look at the empirical evidence and discuss elite configurations and their consequences for democracy and political stability in different countries. close
