Many states and societies across the so-called Arab World witnessed protests, upheavals, and political violence since 2011. In this seminar we compare the developments across the region since 2011 and focus on a number of countries, exploring the relevant actor constellations and dynamics (domestic and international), to explain the various outcomes of transformation, military coup or restauration and civil war. The focus of the discussions will deal with the consequences for democracy and human rights in the region and beyond. The seminar will be based on academic literature but also include other sources such as films, speeches, or interviews to discuss the events and their consequences. For some of the sessions we will have guest speakers and witnesses to discuss the events during 2011 and developments since. close
