Mixed-method research is postulated to gain deeper understanding of studied phenomena. It blends different qualitative and quantitative methods. Central to successful application of mixed-method designs is the careful consideration of the relationship between the different methods. The course will introduce students to the epistemological premises of qualitative research and quantitative research methods and discuss possibilities for mixing methods and epistemological stances. It will familiarize them with different types of mixed-method research designs and explore challenges and advantages related to each of them. The course will include formulating the appropriate research questions, collecting and analysing different qualitative and quantitative data, and interpreting mixed methods research results. Students are expected to design their own study as a mix-method study. The overall aim of the class is to enhance the students’ skills in designing research. close
