The international order appears everywhere to be in crisis. This course critically examines the challenges facing the contemporary international order to assess what kind of “order” it is/has been, what we might mean by “crisis,” and what kind of crisis it might be. Organized into thematic sections, it explores sources/sites of crisis, such as changing geopolitical power relations, economic inequalities, the performance deficits of multilateral institutions, declining organizational legitimacy, the rise of authoritarianism and populism, democratic backsliding, and global (in)justice. Through historical analysis, case studies, and theoretical debates, we will assess how this moment of transformation in the international order threatens global stability and also evaluate to what extent it might open up prospects for a renewed or transformed global order in the 21st century. close
