Proseminar
Quantitative Perspectives in International Political Economy
Asja Riggert
Comments
This seminar provides an introduction to quantitative perspectives in International Political Economy (IPE) by engaging with key theoretical debates and exploring quantitative programming in R. The goal is to develop a critical understanding of quantitative methods, examining their relevance to specific theoretical discussions and identifying both their strengths and also their limitations.
The course structure alternates between theoretical content sessions and R programming workshops, where the latter provides exploration and illustration of concepts introduced in the former. Within statistical methods, the focus will be on descriptive statistics and basic regression analysis. No prior knowledge of R or quantitative methods is required, making this an accessible introduction to both.
Thematically, the course centres on the political economy of finance and money. While touching on various IPE theories, particular emphasis will be placed on power structures in the international financial system, which will be the first part of the seminar exploring approaches of instrumental and structural power. The second part of the seminar will engage with key concepts around money, credit, currency hegemony and shadow banking and how different concepts of power can help understand these phenomena.
For both parts the R workshops will introduce applications and examples relevant to the respective topics. By the end of the course, students will be able to use fundamental R functions, including data visualization and summary statistics.
