Advanced seminar
Herbert Marcuse, Eros and Civilization
Francesca Raimondi
Additional information / Pre-requisites
Prerequisites: Some familiarity with Freud and Frankfurt School critical theory is helpful but not required.
Comments
This seminar explores Herbert Marcuse’s Eros and Civilization (1955), a radical synthesis of Freudian psychoanalysis and critical theory. Marcuse reinterprets Freud’s theory of repression and the unconscious in light of Marxist social critique, asking whether civilization necessarily demands the suppression of human desires—or whether alternative forms of social organization could allow for a freer, more fulfilling existence.
We will focus on three central themes: Marcuse’s critical use of psychoanalysis; the role of art and aesthetic experience; the concept of emancipation.
