Comments

Pictorial representation seems fundamentally different to its linguistic cousin. The connection between the word ‘cat’ and cute feline creatures that purr is largely conventional, as evidenced by the fact that other language use other words (such as ‘neko’ in Japanese) to pick out those creatures. But the connection between pictures of cats and cats seems less conventional: pictures tend to resemble the things they represent in ways that words do not: drawings of cats tend to include depictions of ears, tails, and whiskers, for instance. This course will examine a range of issues about the representational properties of pictures and is structured around two distinctions: the distinction between hand-made and mechanically generated pictures (think: paintings vs photographs), and the distinction between static images and moving images (think: painting vs animation, photography vs cinema). close
