The introductory course "Vorbereitung für den Japanaufenthalt" is designed primarily for students who will soon be leaving for a possible long-term educational stay, such as an exchange program. The focus of the course is twofold. First, it aims to develop students' critical ability to reflect more deeply on what they would encounter. It is crucial not to let what we perceive collide unprocessed, but to analyze each observation, each astonishment with the help of existing literature, discussion, and critical reflection. Attributing everything to a peculiarity of Japan can never be a satisfactory answer. Exposing oneself to complex, ambiguous, and uncertain situations while searching for commonalities would enhance one's ability as a Japanologist. Second, practical tips to make your start in Japan easier. What is life like at a Japanese university? How can I learn cultural communication codes more effectively? What are the strengths of our partner universities and the niche attractions in their vicinity? What travel or job search tips can I use during my stay in Japan? All these questions and many more will be discussed during the semester and should allay any worries and fears you may have before embarking on an exchange programme. close
