Advanced seminar
Berlin Biennial
Eric de Bruyn
Comments
The Berlin Biennial is an important international event and this summer, the 13th edition will go on view. Curated by Zasha Colah, the main theme of the biennial will be “fugitivity” which understood as “the cultural ability of a work of art to set its own laws, in the face of lawful violence” and will question constructions of “minority” within the art world. Leading up to a discussion of the theme and contributing artists in the exhibition, we will examine both the general phenomenon of the biennial as a symptom of the globalization of the art world and, more specifically, the history of the biennial itself, focusing on the previous two or three editions. The course will involve excursions within Berlin to visit the exhibition, discuss the works on view and, hopefully, meet with the curator(s) and some of the artists involved. To accommodate excursions, the seminar is organized as a block seminar meeting every other week for four hours. However, it may not be possible to organize all excursions during the scheduled seminar hours and some flexibility may be required from the seminar participants in this regard. The seminar will be conducted in English and German. close
