AM: Roles, Identities, and the Power of Narratives: “Japan” in International Politics
Erik Isaksson
Comments
What does it mean to be a “pacifist country” (heiwa kokka) in times of geopolitical tension? How do the Japanese government, the Japanese people and domestic political movements imagine Japan’s role on the world stage? How do narratives form our understandings of what “Japan” is and what it should be? This course looks critically at developments in Japan’s international relations in the last couple of years. It deals with traditional theoretical perspectives in International Relations (IR) such as Realism but gives particular weight to critically question dominant understandings of concepts like “security”. close
