The Sumerian City Laments
In this course we will study and translate the Sumerian city laments, a group of ancient Mesopotamian literary texts that mourn the destruction of specific Sumerian cities and their temples, typically caused by enemies and divine abandonment. Known from tablets from the Old Babylonian period (2004–1595 BC) and composed in a mixture of the main Sumerian dialect and the Emesal register of the language, these laments are among the earliest examples of elegiac writing.
The course will be taught in English.
Prior knowledge of Sumerian is required. close
