Globale Abenteuer, lokales Publikum: Frühneuzeitliche Gefangenschaftsberichte lesen
Alexander Schunka, Volkhard Wels
Comments
Captivity narratives are widespread in the early modern period, ranging from accounts of monastic escapes during the Reformation to stories of pirate victims in the Mediterranean, 17th century religious refugees, Europeans in North America or on the Indian subcontinent, to depictions of imprisonment and captivity in war. Many of these reports not only take on literary forms but also have an almost novelistic character. Topics related to captivity and escape can also be found in numerous novels of the time. The overlapping of fact and fiction justifies an interdisciplinary approach to this genre. We use selected texts to examine the narrative techniques and topoi, but also their character as ego-documents, the intended audience and the mechanisms of reception. close
