Comments
The history of Prussia in the Early Modern period is deeply intertwined with its geographical features, landscapes, and even parks and gardens, as well as the ways these were shaped and utilized. From the large-scale drainage of the Oderbruch under Frederick II (from 1747) and the land and agrarian reforms under Stein and Hardenberg (from 1807) to the creation of landscaped gardens such as the New Garden in Potsdam, interventions in nature not only influenced Prussia’s economic and social development but also served as tools of state authority and representation. This seminar examines how landscapes and the environment functioned both as resources and as arenas for political and social negotiation. At the same time, the course offers a foundational introduction to Prussia’s political, social, and cultural history during the Early Modern period. Traditional topics such as dynastic developments, state formation, and religion (e.g., Pietism), as well as the relationships between monarchy and estates or between nobility and rural populations, are addressed, with an effort to explore these themes through the lens of environmental and landscape history. close
